Christmas at Nurenburg - 1999

We visited the Nurenburg Christmas Market in December with our friends Chris and Katka. It was a good goofy time. Everyone bought Santa hats. Sadly, the weather was cold and damp and not at all like Christmas. Still, after some Mulled Wine and shopping, the trip was quite a success.

Gothic Mansion This is one square and directly across you can see agothic house. The steep roof is very typical of Germanic medieval buildings. The Christmas market stretches across the old town and is one of the oldest in the world.

The River
All land-locked cities depend on the riverways. Also, the rivers have some of the best views and buildings.

Brass Band
This is thw main market square. A brass band is on the colorful stage in front of the cathedral. Despite the weather, this had a real Christmas atmosphere.

By the tree
Here's Michelle and me by a decorated Christmas tree in the market. We have wine and are thawing out.

Christmas Carousel
Another picture of us, here in front of an enormous Christmas Carousel. These were a nice unique item at the market.

Festival Statue
This is part of a set of statues along a walkway. It's a festival drunk (possibly Falstaff?)

Marriage Allegory
This is something called the allegory of marriage. The couple are killing each other. Get it! Hah hah hah! Oh, that wacky German sense of humor.

Scaley Beast
Another part of the allegory has a man taming a beast. I actually thought it was kinda cute. I don't know what that says about me.

Blue Folks
We did a lot of wandering around. It was nice to find some secret spot of the city. The others rest and look at the river.

River View
Another, final look at the river. The buildings and atmosphere of the city were magical. The fairy tale quality makes it a perfect Christmas town.

The Christmas Market was very delightful. We found some nice presents and spent a fun day. In 2000, we'll go to Regensburg for a different Market.
